So now that we have let the cat out of the bag that I am pregnant, I guess I should share how we learned of this amazing news. Wade and I have been wishing and hoping and praying for a little baby to join our family pretty much since we got married over four years ago. We have had many roller coaster moments throughout the journey, so words could not express how excited we were to discover there is a little muffin in the oven.
As I stated in an earlier post, Wade recently started his new job on Monday, October 25th. I am now around six weeks along so you do the math. We had heard so many times that once you just relax it will happen. Wade gets a job and I guess we just relaxed! We had conversations that if things didn’t work for us between now and the end of the year that we would take more aggressive clinical measures to have a baby, but thank goodness it didn’t come to that!
Wade took me to Vista Lights on Thursday, November 18th. Vista Lights is an annual event in the Vista District downtown where they close the main drag and light the big Christmas tree. The shops stay open late and have cookies and punch to share. There are bands playing Christmas music and children’s dance group performing Christmas numbers. It is a neat event. We were eating dinner and I told Wade I think I may be pregnant. He really didn’t believe me and kind of blew me off by saying something like “yeah, we will see”. (Trust me it is hard to believe something like this is really happening when month after month you have been waiting in hopeful expectation!) I said, no I am serious! He still didn’t believe me. We proceeded to have a conversation about baby names. I told Wade I would just get through the weekend and try not to think about it and see what happens the beginning of the following week. He agreed.
Saturday we got up and went to the Troy/USC football game which was a day game. On the way home we stopped at Moe’s for a bite to eat. When we left Moe’s I told him I just could not stand it anymore! I made him stop at the Rite Aid across the street and buy a package of test. He was still not feeling my vibe at this point. We got home and I think he forgot all about it. He was washing dishes at the sink when I came running out of the bedroom crying and screaming. He said I scared him to death. He didn’t know what was going on. I told him “this is not how I wanted to tell you, but this is how I am going to tell you…. I’m pregnant”. He said “What? Are you serious? Go take another test.” I told him the sticks don’t lie, but I took two more anyway, and they all had the same result. I was so overwhelmed! My heart was just a racing! We called our closest family and friends that night to let them know. They had been on this long journey with us and we wanted to share our joy with them as soon as we knew.
The next day we still couldn’t believe this was happening, so I took two more tests, of a different brand, and sure enough! Positive! We told his family the next week at the annual family Thanksgiving dinner which was filled with laughter and tears! We have told my extended family in phases over the phone since they live so far away.
So what have the first few weeks of pregnancy been like? As in the song, “ You’re a mean one, Mr. Grinch”, fitting for the season, I have felt much like a seasick crocodile for the past week pretty much all day every day. They say that is a sign of a healthy baby, but boy, it is not fun! Hopefully it will pass soon. I get pretty tired pretty easily so I am really just trying to take it easy, especially until we get the all clear from the doctor.
Wade loves to talk to the baby. It doesn’t matter to him that the baby doesn’t have ears yet . He is very excited to become a Dad. He is taking good care of me and the house which is allowing me to just rest when I am at home to take care of me and Baby Kay. He even made the Chili for my Bible study I was hosting at the house this past Monday. I must say it was rather tasty! I am enamored to think I am growing a human being. That is just mind blowing!
I have some excellent friends who have been to the pregnancy rodeo themselves a couple of times and they are taking good care of me too with their wealth of information, tips and resources. A good friend is letting me borrow her “What to Expect When You Are Expecting” book and a DVD that her doctor gave her that walks one through pregnancy. Me and my type A personality welcomes this kind of information since I like to know everything I possibly can about a situation before it happens!
All in all we are doing great and pray every day that Baby Kay will get stronger and stronger and the complications will go away!
Oh – and how did I really want to tell Wade we are having a baby? I wanted to get big brother and big sister shirts to put on the dogs and have them parade out around him. I was going to let the shirts do the talking for me and see how long it took him to figure it out!
